Playing some games like Quiz Trivia you don't get to know correct answer, can you devise some method in which the correct answer is indicated? I apologise if I'm not follwing instructions correctly. Thanks very much, really enjoy.

Jessie: Hi penguin51, in some of our Trivia games, you must keep trying until the correct answer is revealed. I recommend you try Quizzard of Oz and Tasty Trivia to start.

Hi, I was fortunate enough to win the Lovatt's Daily Lucky Member draw around 17th March (altho it could have been the 24th). To date (17th April) I have received nothing from you. Is it normal to waiit this long - or has it been lost in the post somewhere?

Jessie: Hi crosswordcat, congratulations on winning a prize! In answer to your question, don't despair: it can take up to six weeks for the prizes to be dispatched. I am sure yours is on its way, but just in case, I have forwarded this letter to our Accounts Manager who will follow it up for you.

I wonder if between Easter and Xmas hunts, Lovatts would do another hunt, maybe called Lovatts themed hunt with all things Lovatts. Maybe find a word used in a xword. Or mags of course. Merchandise you sell. Names games on YouPlay, including finding the word 'YouPlay'. Perhaps find Christine's avatar, and other staff avatars. Just a thought, as it's a long time between hunts for Lovatts avid fans. Sincerely Diana1

Hello to the Team at YP, first of all thank you so much for this wonderful site, I love coming here to play and slowly getting braver in trying out a different game here and there. I have renewed my premium membership for the second year a few weeks back and wondered if I will get the Puzzle Magazines again this year or if it was just for the initial joining? Keep up the great job you are doing, please :)

Jessie: Hi Valkyrie21, so glad to hear you're enjoying the site! Yes, you do get the free Lovatts magazines each time you renew your membership (this process can take 6-8 weeks).

Hi everone, I only started playing recently but I am having fun. I have just one problem at the moment. Every time I look at the leaderboards I notice that everyone there is from Australia. I can understand if people are grouped together because of their geogrphic location, but I am in AUSTRIA. I am in the Northern Hemisphere, at least half a world away. Should I be in a European group.

Jessie: Hi pantera - welcome, and I'm so pleased that you're enjoying the site! To answer your question, we don't have 'groups' per se - the reason you're seeing a lot of Australian flags is simply that a high percentage of our members come from Australia. If you visit our Member's List , you will see that YouPlayers come from all over the world!

I've noticed that the two leaders on the member's list; Margw1 and fochu have been regular players but there score has not moved in the last 3 weeks, maybe more. Can you guys only count to 2,147,483,647 because that is what their score has been for some time????

Jessie: Well spotted MikeyC! It seems there was a glitch in our scoring (which only affected those two players), but our trusty tech team has this sorted and any missing points will be reinstated. Thanks for the heads up!

From: Tanunda

Your clue: "eat under the stars." Your answer: "picnic" - I strongly protest. Your clue implies a nocturnal activity, while picnicking is a daytime activity. "Camping out" would be more appropriate as a night time eating activity. Picnicking is most definitely 'eating under the sun.'

Miranda (Digital Compiling Manager): Hi Tanunda, no definition of 'picnic' limits the time of day, only the location... I agree that if one were picnicking and then staying over in that location, it would certainly be camping. But when you're packing a picnic basket and rug to watch the New Year's fireworks, an evening concert or just a sunset followed by the night sky, it's definitely under the stars and picnicking and great fun, too.

Regarding your Players Poll question - "Yum! What's your favourite summer stone fruit?" - as a Banana Bender from way-back, I dispute the fact that YouPlay has included Mango as a stone fruit. Admittedly it has a large seed in the centre, and is certainly a summer fruit - but tropical, and therefore not a stone fruit?

Jessie: Ahh yes, I did take certain liberties on that poll option! I apologise if I caused offence - incidentally, 'mango' was the most popular option!

The Game Quiz Time shows you in green when you get the correct answer and is red when you don't but when wrong does not show you what the correct answer was. Could the game be changed to show the correct answer when you get it wrong so that we learn from this and improve ourselves and future game questions?

Jessie: Ah, the Quiz Time game was purposely designed NOT to reveal the correct answer - just to keep it challenging! If you really find this frustrating, our other Trivia games allow you to choose options until the correct answer is revealed - and the 'Trivia Teaser' mini-game will also reveal the correct answer. Good luck!

You are still eligible to enter 'Game of Skill' style promotions however, and we hold regular comps throughout the year. Hi Jesse Just a question in regards to competitions and free members winning some of the prizes. I would have thought that the prizes should be for premium members only. After all we members that have paid to be premium members I feel should be the ones winning the prizes, not those members who are free members. Otherwise there's not really a reason to have premium membership. When I first joined You Play and upgraded to premium membership, I assumed that the reason you upgraded your membership was to be able to enter comps and win prizes.

Jessie: Hi Sabby, thanks for your feedback. First, I should say that we are very grateful to all those who sign up for Premium Memberships as without subscribers this website would struggle to stay afloat. In fact we always try to offer our Premiums extra value in relation to prizes - for instance, in this year's Christmas Holiday Hunt, the 1st prize winner was the first Premium Member to find all of the items (regardless of if a Free Member had got there first). Also, there is a Weekly Premium-only cash prize draw. Other benefits of upgrading include greatly reduced advertising and free Lovatts puzzle magazines.

avatar

From: Zacpark

Re the Holiday Hunt: I think there should be a running tally of the number of hidden icons each day so that we are not spending time searching in vain. Two main reasons for this (1) not all of us have unlimited internet access and (2) we could spend our available time gaming instead of hunting.

Jessie: Hi Zacpark: there is no running tally for the Holiday Hunt, so to speak. As this is a competition we need to keep an element of mystery! All you need to know is that a set number of items are released each day. By the final day of the competition, all items will be available to be found. The Hunt is meant to be fun, we don't want you to find it stressful. If you would prefer to play the games then do so!

Merry Christmas To you all. I was just wondering, my son who is 10 loves doing crosswords and he loves word search puzzles, but finds the ones on here a big difficult. Is it possible to add a kids section to you play just for children to do? hugs Sabby

Jessie: Hi Sabby, Unfortunately at the moment we don't cater for kids (it's a requirement that YouPlay members are aged 13 and over). This is because -  as you can imagine - there are lots of legal implications when allowing website access to minors. However, in saying that, a kids section is something we DO get a lot of requests for - and we're definitely looking into how best to include this in our future development plans. Like any online chat session, how can you be sure of who you are chatting with? There are many dangers e.g. teenagers being groomed by adults; adults cheating on their partners by forming clandestine online relationships; exchanging email addresses and extending the online chat to more personal contact unbeknownst to their parters who inevitably find out and people get hurt. Not to mention the fact that people who spend inordinate amounts of time interacting with a computer are not living a real life.

Jessie: Hi Dancequeen, the Chat Room on YouPlay is entirely optional - you don't have to visit it if it's not your cup of tea. There is an Ignore function that allows you to block messages (if required) and we keep a log of all chat. If an issue is reported to us, we will follow it up in line with our Site Communications policy

Love the puzzles and am permanently logged into the site. I also have a mag subscription here in the UK. Keep up the good work.

Jessie: Hi oxo, glad you're enjoying the puzzles on YouPlay! It's certainly true that most of our members hail from NZ and AUS and (in a random draw competition) the winners are often from those two countries. To do things right takes little or no extra effort than half done. Your percentage right calculations for Trivia Teaser questions are incorrect. I have been monitoring my questions and answers for the last 400 questions and scored aprox 8:1 correct. At 1800 questions my average was 89% and now at 2330 it is still 89%. Unless certain questions have different values to others, your formulation is erronous.

Dr Play: Hi Jennos, we’ve considered your assertion and calculated the percentage resulting from getting approximately 8:1 correct – or 8 out of 9 correct – is approximately 8 divided by 9, (8/9)=0.88888889. So, by this reasoning the overall percentage you have achieved appears to be correct.

Why can't I acces puzzles on my iPad?

Jessie: Hi Squackle, unfortunately YouPlay games are created in Flash... which is sadly not supported on iPhone/iPad at this stage. It's a frustrating situation that affects many websites and users. You'll be happy to know that this year we are working on a YouPlay app, from which you will be able to play all your favourite puzzles and games. We'll keep you posted!

Have recently upgraded my membership and was delighted to recieve my free puzzle books. I handed over the Kids Puzzle Fun to my grandson Sean He was so excited he set about winning a fortune in prizes immediately, only to discover the books are 7 months out of date. We are very dissappointed, I would rather have had one current kids book . I thought it was a bit lousy.... Thankyou for your time, Barbara.

Jessie: Hi Barbara, firstly to explain the situation, the Lovatts Handy magazines are quarterly publications, and as we endeavour to get the free books out to our Premium Members ASAP, sometimes we will send the previous issue (rather than make you wait another three months). However, I'd hate for your grandson to be disappointed so I will contact you through your personal email to arrange sending out the latest copy, plus a copy of the annual Kids Bumper Fun.

I would like to query the spelling of "Tutanhhamun" in a recent General Knowledge crossword. I realise there are many and varied ways of spelling the boy king's name but I visited the official exhibition in Melbourne last weekend and have the booklet from that exhibition in front of me written by two distinguished scholars in this field and the spelling was as above and not "Tutankhamen" as alleged in your crossword.

Miranda: As to the spelling, there is as much agreement between philosophers as between clocks! Also, it would appear, Egyptologists. The spelling can be -AMUN -AMEN or - AMON

I have tried previously to have the cryptic crossword scoring system explained without success. I understand that extra points can be scored by a boost system that gives extra points for rapid answers. However, no-one seems willing to explain the impossibly-low times which are attributed to completing the cryptic crossword. These times, often less than one minute, presumably lead to scores more than double what a normal player can achieve. My conclusion - it's a waste of time trying to compare oneself with the so-called record scores, since clearly we are not competinging on a level playing field. Come on Lovatts - explain it.

Dr. Play:  The fact is that we have some very clever people playing our puzzles, some of which happen to be very quick on the keys.  Yes, it's true that someone could potentially solve most of the puzzle when not logged in and then return to their account with most of the solution before typing in the solution very quickly.  If you'd really like to get an idea of how fast others are finishing on average, check out the detailed leaderboards section, eg. for the Cryptic Crossword here - that will help you understand how you compare to those who are *really* doing the puzzle without hints or 'cheating'.  Hope that helps, happy puzzling!

I love the number puzzles and the Trivia , Im not too bad at it considering that im classed as an old f**t ? hehehe. YP is just a nice way to spend some relaxation time away from a stressful job. I'm starting up my own business soon, so its been a challenge to get all the office stuff done. Have you ever felt ssooo frustrated with 'office word' that you are ready to throw a perfectly good computer through a perfectly good CLOSED window? (Memo to self... the vaccum does not pick up all of the glass). After countless tries to print my business cards... I finally succeeded - YAY! But they didnt fit the template... sob sob. Solution? EXIT windows word, click YP and put an old blanket up at the broken window to stop the cool night air (!) while i play some games and chat to friends, hehehe! -  Spoggy

I really love this site and many of its games, but I have to ask two questions: - why do I have to play Trivia Combat only with robots? I'm waiting for opponents, as I've been told ...and waiting...and waiting ...and after more than 10 minutes I have to give up and play with robots! Is it by chance because I'm a free and not a Premium member? I've played Trivia Combat many times and it happened just once to have a real opponent while the game is played by 700-800 other players. It is really frustrating! -why can't I save my results on my favourite game- Bookworm? I click on the "save" button and nothing happens.

JESSIE: The fact that you are a free Member will not affect who you play against in any combat game; a more likely answer to your query is that at the time you were playing there were not many available opponents.

Also, as Bookworm is a PopCap game (not a YouPlay house game) we are unable to offer the Save option. Can I suggest though that if you do play this game a lot you consider downloading the full version? You will then be able to save your progress - plus enjoy the HUGE amount of other features available in the download version. Download Bookworm HERE  - you can also play free for one hour to decide whether the game is absolutely right for you.

Thank you for making my day. I love all the puzzles and have been playing here since before the site was upgraded to its present format. Great Stuff. The only thing I'd like to see, is the Logic puzzles that have been described by others here. Also I agree with Beauregarde, about Dr Play's explanation of the Booster effect, so that the newer players can understand the scoring system. It would be beneficial to display his post.

avatar

From: JohnRose
Date: 7th July, 2011

Thanks for responding Beauregarde. I haven't followed up your suggestion yet as only just found it. However, just completed the cryptic in 3 minutes 3 seconds by working off line and then just typing in the answers on line (just for the experiment - I normally play fair). My score - still 19840 - the same score as for subsatntially higher times. Could Lovatts or Youplay please explain the scoring system to us newcomers

avatar

From: Beauregarde
Date: 2nd July, 2011

In reply to JohnRose - you might like to hunt up an archived blog called "Dr. Play talks points", which explains the "booster" effect. This affects the score according to our speed, and makes it possible to reach high scores by finishing all the words in a crossword right at the end. We used to have a forum, where we could exchange tips and knowledge about the puzzles, but that was discontinued. I wonder how many newcomers know there is such a thing as the booster, or how Dr Play suggested we use it. Could the original blog be resurrected to help current players?

JESSIE: You can read the Dr Play Talks Points blog HERE

I use public transport and the first time I took one of your books with me I became so engrossed I missed my stop and was consequently late for work :D. A welcome addition would be multi-player word games to compliment the combat sudoku and combat trivia that already exist. Jig-saw puzzles would be nice too. Also, I would love Love LOVE it if the chat emoticons could be added to (eg a coffee cup, a piece of cake, a clown, an embarrassed face) and it would spice things up if we could choose different colours for text. Cheers :D

I've been using your site almost daily for a couple of months, mainly doing your cryptic crosswords which I enjoy. I cannot figure the scoring system. Somehow I never seem to score more than 19840, when others seem to be able to get more than double this. Also, how can anyone complete the cryptic in just 45 seconds? Even if you print off the puzzle and clues, complete it off line, and then go on line to just type in the words, I defy anyaone doing it in 45 seconds. What am I missing. Is there a link on your site to the scoring system, particularly of the cryptic crosswords?

I would like to point out to debdestiny56 (and others like-minded) that just because there isn't a game recorded against a member's record it doesn't mean that that member hasn't visited the site and/or played a game. Have you considered that the weekly prize draw winners, who you are complaining about, may have serious Popcap web game addictions? I think the suggested proviso would be unfair. Let's celebrate our differences instead of expecting all to be as we are.

Hi Jessie. I think the games are great just as they are, I try to play most of them everyday, I'm fortunate that I have the time. I have one suggestion though regarding the weekly prize draw. I'm getting a little fed up with seeing winners who have never played a game or haven't played a game recently. I think you should bring in a proviso to winning the draw, it could be that in order to win a player must play at least 5 games a day or 20 a week. It would make it a lot fairer on those of us who do dedicate a lot of time to YouPlay and never win a thing. I play for the love of the games but the weekly prize draw would be icing on the cake for the most dedicated players. Thanks Deb

JESSIE: Hi Deb, I'd just like to mention that the laws surrounding running prize draws are crazily complex and highly explicit. For us to run draws at all we must allow ALL eligible members equal opportunity to win. Cheers

Hi Jessie, We have Sudoku Combat, we have Trivia Combat, would it be at all possible to get a multiplayer word game as well. I would dearly love to be able to play a game such as Wheel of Fortune here on YouPlay, it would make my YouPlay gaming experience complete.

Many thanks to you and the team at YouPlay for putting on a terrific Valentine's Day Trivia Tournament on what is already an excellent site!

Despite stiff competition from some very, very good YouPlayers, I got lucky and fell across the line.

Once again, many thanks for a great tournament!

This has been a marvellous competition, and judging by the comments of numerous players, a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I personally, anxiously await any further competitions.

My congratulations are extended to the other winners, and in general, to all those who participated and made this a truly exhilarating event.

Thank you very much, my Lucky Member cheque arrived. My sister's birthday next week so I will split the prize and buy us both some of your puzzle books, a great treat for both.

We both enjoy your site very much and get lots of enjoyment from it. Once again, thank you so much for the thrill and the treats.
