Question

Choose your favourite fictional detective.

Options

Miss Marple
Perry Mason
Magnum P.I.
Hercule Poirot
Jessica Fletcher
Sherlock Holmes
Columbo
Philip Marlowe
Scooby Doo

Gadzooks YouPlayers, this is a toughie! Fondly do I remember childhood sick days curled on the sofa with a box of tissues, a ribena and repeats of Murder She Wrote and Perry Mason. Then there's the hardboiled city smarts of Marlowe, or the comforting Miss Marple - just like a hug from nanna. Which to choose? It's a mystery![ok, groan]

If your fave fictional sleuth doesn't apear in the options, add him/her here!

Jess x

Results

Miss Marple - 363 votes (15%)
Perry Mason - 158 votes (7%)
Magnum P.I. - 274 votes (11%)
Hercule Poirot - 300 votes (12%)
Jessica Fletcher - 241 votes (10%)
Sherlock Holmes - 262 votes (11%)
Columbo - 300 votes (12%)
Scooby Doo - 511 votes (21%)

The results were extremely close with only 1 or 2 percentage points seperating the majority of our fictional detectives (no wonder there's so many of these shows on TV!)

One clear winner did however, eventuate - and that winner is... er, Scooby Doo? I think I shall refrain from any further commentary...

Jess :)

I voted for Jessica Fletcher, but when I was a teenager I read the Trixie Belden books so she is also a favourite fictional sleuth of mine.

What A Dilemma!!!
My actual favourite is Kinsey Millhone of the Alphabet series by Sue Grafton.
But now I can't say who I prefer _ Miss Marple or Hercule Poirot.
I loved all Perry Mason and Phillip Marlowe.
I shall have to take my time over this one, before making a decision.

I'm addicted to the "In Death" series by Nora Roberts writing as J D Robb.
The female homicide detective is Eve Dallas, wife of Roarke. The series is set in the future, about 50 years ahead, and Eve is a tough New York cop. It's not suitable for younger readers, but the characters are extremely well drawn, and as a series one gets to know the minor characters well, their backgrounds, and the interactions between Eve, Roarke, the other detectives and friends.

Of the list supplied, I think Miss Marple wins my vote, especially in the film series where she was played by Margaret Rutherford (if memory serves me - it was a long time ago).

When I was younger I loved Nancy Drew and read a lot of the books, but from the list my vote had to go to Scooby Doo :-)

I couldn't stand Colombo; he always irritated me no end. I used to hope the baddies would get away with their crime. Sherlock Holmes has to be the greatest ever.

I really like Rebus. Is anyone with me on that one?

I forgot about Lincoln Rhyme, a creation by Jeffrey Deaver. I don't miss any of his books either.
By the way, I actually voted for Miss Marple as I think she is a little more entertaining than Poirot.

lani07 - I also loved Nancy Drew when I was younger. And Enid Blyton's "Famous Five" (lashings of lemonade and jewel-smugglers n' all!)

I like Rebus too, Ceedub. And I've watched many a gritty episode of "A Touch of Frost" with my dad!
